If actives like retinol and acids are the engines of a skincare routine, ceramides are the chassis. They rarely get the headlines, but without them, nothing else holds together, because ceramides are what your skin barrier is actually made of.
What are ceramides?
Ceramides are lipids, fatty molecules, that make up a large share of the skin's outermost layer. Together with cholesterol and fatty acids, they form the mortar between your skin cells: the seal that keeps water in and irritants out. When that mortar runs low, from weather, over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers or simply age, skin becomes dry, tight, reactive and prone to redness.
Why apply them?
Because topping up works. Applied in a well-built formula, ceramides slot into the barrier they came from, and the closer the mix is to the skin's own, the better. That is why the ratio matters: ceramides paired with cholesterol and phytosphingosine mirror the skin's natural barrier composition rather than just coating the surface.
Who needs them?
Almost everyone at some point. Skin that feels tight after cleansing, stings when products go on, or drinks moisturiser without ever feeling hydrated is usually short on barrier lipids, not short on water. Ceramides are also the quiet partner that makes stronger actives tolerable: a supported barrier handles retinoids and acids far better than a depleted one.
Ceramides the Jorgobé way
We build ceramides into the products where the barrier does the heavy lifting. Our Ectoin Hydra Serum carries a triple ceramide complex with cholesterol and phytosphingosine for skin that has had too much, and our Collagen Peptide Serum holds a ceramide complex too, because firmness depends on an intact barrier. Like everything we make, they are vegan, made in Denmark, and free from parabens and silicones.
