Dull skin is not dirty skin. It is dead cells sitting on the surface, scattering light instead of reflecting it, and no amount of washing will shift them. That is the problem glycolic acid was made for, and it is one of the few exfoliating ingredients with proper clinical research behind it.
What is glycolic acid?
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane, and the smallest AHA molecule there is. That size matters: it works evenly across the whole surface of the skin rather than just polishing the high points, dissolving the bonds that hold dead cells in place so the surface renews at the pace it used to.
What does the research show?
In a randomised study of 115 people, glycolic acid at the strength we use was significantly more effective than placebo by day 45, with tolerability no different from placebo. That last part deserves attention. The reputation acids have for leaving skin tight and flaking comes from formulas that get the details wrong, not from the acid itself. Done properly, effective exfoliation and comfortable skin are not opposites.
What can you expect?
Brighter skin and finer texture within the first few weeks, less visible pigmentation and fewer marks left by old blemishes as you keep going, and fine lines that soften as the surface keeps renewing.
How to use it
A few evenings a week, and no more than three. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin after cleansing and leave it on. There is nothing to rinse off. Always wear SPF 30 or higher during the day: freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to sun, and without sunscreen the work on pigmentation is undone.
Glycolic acid the Jorgobé way
Our AHA Exfoliator pairs 10% glycolic acid with glycerin and betaine, which hold moisture in while the acid works. That is what separates it from the acids that leave skin tight for days. It is fragrance-free. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or midwife before use. Like everything we make, it is vegan and made in Denmark.
