Hyaluronic acid is the most famous hydrator in skincare, and for once, the fame is deserved. Your skin makes it naturally, it can bind many times its own weight in water, and it is one of the least demanding ingredients there is: no adjustment period, no sensitivity, no conflicts with other actives.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Despite the name, it is not an exfoliating acid. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, a molecule that attracts and holds water. It occurs naturally in the skin, where it keeps tissue plump and supple, but the amount declines with age, and with it goes some of the bounce.

Why molecular weight matters

Here is the detail most products skip: hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes, and size decides where it works. Large molecules sit at the surface, smoothing and holding moisture there. Smaller ones reach further down and hydrate the deeper layers. A formula built on a single weight hydrates one level of the skin. A formula that spans several weights hydrates throughout, which is the difference between skin that looks dewy for an hour and skin that stays comfortable all day.

What can you expect?

Immediate plumping of the surface, softer-looking fine lines where dehydration is the cause, and skin that feels less tight by mid-afternoon. Hyaluronic acid does not replace a moisturiser: follow it with a cream to seal the water in.
