Blackheads and congestion do not sit on the surface. They sit inside the pore, a mix of sebum and dead skin cells lodged where no scrub can reach. That is why scrubbing harder never works, and why salicylic acid does.
What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), and its defining feature is that it is oil-soluble. Where water-soluble acids like glycolic work on the surface, salicylic acid dissolves into sebum and travels down into the pore itself, loosening the blockage from the inside. It is the only common exfoliating acid that works where blackheads actually live.
What does it do?
Inside the pore, salicylic acid dissolves the bonds holding dead cells and sebum together, clearing congestion and helping prevent the next blockage from forming. On the surface, it smooths texture and calms the mild irritation that comes with congested skin. The visible result: fewer blackheads, refined-looking pores and skin that stays clearer between breakouts.
How to use it
Less is more with BHA. One to three evenings a week is enough for most skin. Apply to clean, dry skin, avoid the eye area, and do not pair it with other strong acids or retinoids in the same routine step. And leave the blackheads alone in between: congestion clears faster when it is not squeezed.
Salicylic acid the Jorgobé way
Our BHA Exfoliator delivers 2% salicylic acid, the well-studied cosmetic dose, on a base of glycerin and betaine that keeps skin comfortable while the acid works. It is a liquid you sweep on with a cotton pad, no rinsing, no scrubbing. It is how we use it ourselves in three of our regimens: for blemishes, for pores and blackheads, and for oily skin. Like everything we make, it is vegan, made in Denmark, and free from parabens and silicones.
